Bios and approach
Drawing on their decade-long creative relationship, the two performers combine their respective approaches in their very first joint project, a thoughtful exploration of their shared passion for partner work. One another reveals the poetry that springs from the close connection of two beings. At the centre of the empty stage, two bodies come together symbiotically to form a single, inseparable entity. Thrusting, leaning, lifting … the dance is built around uninterrupted mutual support. It unfolds in virtuosic, lyrical cycles, in an unbroken stream of figures and movements that rotate, intertwine and mutate continuously. The two dancers embody solidarity and the powerful transformative potential of human connection. They clearly love dancing together, and their enjoyment is contagious.
Since 1979, Sylvain Lafortune danced for international renowned companies such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Lar Lubovitch Dance Co., O Vertigo and Montréal Danse. As a Freelance since 2000, he danced for various projects including Montréal Danse (Prisme, Instant Community), Création Estelle Clareton (Monsieur, S’envoler in co-production with Montréal Danse) and PPS Danse (Les chaises). He has taught in several formal training programs including in l’École de danse contemporaine and in l’École nationale de cirque. He has staged several circus shows, in particular two with the Circus Monti (Switzerland) in collaboration with his co-worker Marie-Josée Gauthier. He is currently working with Circus Stella on the creation of Horizon vertical, a show entirely performed with stilts. His researches at the master’s and PhD levels (UQÀM) on the understanding of partnering, his workshops and conferences and the articles he publishes make him an authority on the subject.
After graduating from l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, Esther Rousseau-Morin used to dance for various companies such as Le Carré Des Lombes, Bouge de Là, Maribé Sors De Ce Corps, Lorganisme (Caroline Laurin-Beaucage), Le Fils d’Adrien danse, Montréal Danse, Créations Estelle Clareton, Trois Tristes Tigres, Alan Lake Factori(e) and Animals Of Distinctions. Moreover, Esther keeps growing while participating in several workshops such as Transformation Danse, Springboard Dance, Bates Dance Festival as well as ImPulsTanz in Vienna, Austria. Meanwhile, she teaches the repertoire of several works in formal training programs and has worked as Sylvain Lafortune’s assistant for 6 years.
